One aim of the component is to gradually reduce the economic
and environmental risks that arise from
introduction of alien fish species. Therefore, the strategy will be to
enable line agencies and other
organizations to develop and promote indigenous alternatives to alien
species, thus removing or reducing the incentive for introductions. To
complement the promotion of indigenous species, the establishment and
implementation of a regional code of practice for introductions will be
supported. Another, more long-term aim is to develop the ability to mitigate
loss of fisheries due to other development projects. Although not a direct
output of this component, it is understood that capacity building of staff
in line agencies will enable them to develop seed production methods and
stocking protocols as the need arises.
Better control of the movement of aquatic organisms will go hand-in-hand
with the progress in developing co-management institutions. The
establishment of co-management is expected to have a positive impact on the
public’s awareness of the potential threats from movement of alien species.
Also, the development of regional management institutions will be crucial
for the implementation of better management practices, including the
movement of alien species.
