Background
Bamboo, over 75 genera and 1,250 species reportedly occur in the world, is one of the most important minor forest products. It provides food, raw material, shelter and medicine for a good part of the world’s population, and it continues to hold an important place in the rural economy of the developing countries. Bamboo is generally grown as a living fence; the shoots are used as food and culms as building material and also for making handicrafts. The lack of income from agricultural crops during the rainy season is compensated by bamboo. Also the surplus of bamboo shoots can be sold in the local market or preserved by steaming, pickling or drying for future consumption.
The importance of bamboo has long been recognized. Five international workshops were organized and a number of regional and national meetings/trainings held during the past two decades. A research network has been institutionalized and a number of projects, networks, societies, forums and groups have been established in different parts of the world. Gathering of the scientists and individuals who are interested in bamboo will provide an excellent opportunity to exchange of knowledge and experience as well as to discuss about the future directions of bamboo resource development.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Thailand
Located on the mainland of Southeast Asia, Thailand is bound to the North and Northeast by the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, to the North and West by the Union of Myanmar, to the East by the Gulf of Thailand and Cambodia, to the West by the Andaman Sea, and to the South by Malaysia.
Thailand’s bustling capital, Bangkok, is one of the world’s most exciting and exotic cities, a dramatic contrast of ancient traditions and modern city life. Behind the hectic facade lies a more tranquil heart and some of Asia’s most spectacular temples to fascinate visitors. Bangkok’s superb hotels, shopping, dining and night life are unrivaled.
Chiangmai is a city built on the roots of a traditional heritage that dig deep into the soil of time. It is a city with a beautiful cultural personality of its own. In addition, it has been blessed with much majestic beauty in nature. The people themselves are an unforgettable part of Chiangmai. Handicrafts of silk, silver and wood are timeless souvenirs for visitors from all over the globe. Along with all this, a wide variety of accommodations, restaurants, and entertainment all help to make Chiangmai one of Thailand’s prime tourist attractions.
Visa requirement
All foreign visitors entering Thailand must be in possession of a valid passport or other travel documents endorsed and valid for Thailand. Visitors from a number of countries will be able to obtain a permit for a two-week stay on arrival at the Bangkok International Airport or Chiangmai International Airport, whilst others will require a visa to be issued before arrival in Thailand. The Organizing Committee strongly recommends that you contact the nearest Embassy/Consulate of Thailand to determine the visa requirements in your case.
Transportation
More than 50 airlines fly to Bangkok International Airport (BKK). Chiangmai is about 700 kilometers north of Bangkok. Chiangmai and Bangkok are linked by regular daily train, bus and air services.
Thai Airways International (TG) operates more than 10 daily flights to and from Chiangmai International Airport (CNX). Some participants may break their journey in Bangkok, while other may take immediate connecting flight to Chiangmai. Persons taking an immediate connecting flight are advised to seek the assistance of the ground staff of Thai Airways to clear immigration formalities on arrival in Bangkok, and prior to taking connecting flight to Chiangmai. Although domestic terminal is in a walking distance, there is a limousine/microbus service (free of charge) from international terminal to domestic terminal. If you check through to Chiangmai, you should contact transfer counter upon arrival for your connecting flight to Chiangmai.
The Organizing Committee will arrange to meet arriving participants at the Chiangmai International Airport. If you are not met at the airport, you are advised to take Empress Hotel shuttle bus outside passenger hall. The hotel has regular transportation for their guests arriving on all flights to Chiangmai.
