9.1.2 Impact on Diminishing Environment of Catchment area in the Lake Limboto

Narrowing and confining of the Lake Limboto raises some problems which are very serious in other sectors/aspects it shows that environment sector embraces a positive correlation to other sectors.

The problems are following:

a) Socio-economic of the community
Impact of diminishing environment in Lake Limboto may reduce land productivity and water quality of Lake Limboto, especially those with earning sources depend on land (i.e., farmers) and fresh water fishing. In order to fulfill their basic needs, they look for other job, because their early profession may not guarantee their living needs in accordance with quality of human resources, the new profession are

  • Forest encroachment
  • Illegal logging/cutting
  • Cultivation on high-slope land
  • Illegal gold mining

b) Flood

As a result of diminished catchment area in Lake Limboto, fluctuation of water river debit between dry season and rainy season is very big. During rainy season, it leads to stream bank erosion and flood damaging some irrigation facilities, while in dry season river bad is relatively so short that may not sufficient for agricultural activity.
