Ecological Health Monitoring for the Mekong Basin Programme. Primary Production and Phytoplankton Composition.

Primary production and phytoplankton composition were tested for their applicability as ecological health indicators for the Mekong systems. Primary production was estimated using the Dark-Light bottle technique, while phytoplankton composition and density were investigated from collected water samples. Both primary production estimates and phytoplankton composition data did not show any unexpected behavior, which suggests that the sampling sites have not encountered ecosystem degradation. The applicability of primary production estimations using the Dark-Light bottle technique is mainly limited by field operation time, while phytoplankton composition is restricted by the personnel's identification skills. Fluorometers may be introduced as an alternative way of quantifying the composition of the major phytoplankton groups. [<BR>] Data on the chemical and physical aspects of the sites is necessary for the meaningful interpretation of the biological information. Another requirement is good annual data due to the significant role of seasonality in the Mekong systems.
