Survey on Forest management and Farming systems

Rural Development Dak Lak (RDDL) is a technical cooperation project funded by the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany. Department of Planning and Investment in Dak Lak province has been selected as a key stakeholder implementing the project under the technical assistance of German Technical Cooperation (GTZ). In Dak Lak province, Ea Sol and Ea Hiao communes in Ea H'leo district and Dak Nue and Bong Krang communes in Lak district have been chosen as pilot sites of the project. The project aims to alleviate poverty and improve livelihood of the rural population through development and adjustment of participatory planning procedures enabling community, social organizations and governmental institutions to identify and support sustainable natural management systems. . Department of Agriculture and Rural Development carried out the preliminary survey of forest management and cultivation systems in selected study areas in accordance with the proposed plan. It is one of major activities with the purpose of preparation for the planning workshop to be held in Buon Ma Thuot in the mid June of 2003. The survey was implemented from May 15 2003 to May 30 2003. Its specific objectives were: . -To summarize the main forest management and farming systems of the project areas including major crop species, cultivating methods, cropping patterns and irrigating requirements. -To summarize characteristics of key households including indicators relevant to household economy. -To evaluate existing irrigation status and potentials in terms of water provision and technical requirements. -To point out the limitations and potentials of existing agricultural products as well as of crops to be grown to satisfy market demands in future. -To identify the sustainability of current forest management and farming systems in regards to ecological and economic aspects. -To recommend adequate approaches for the purpose of improvement of forest management and farming systems on the basis of collected data. . Due to the limit in time, we couldn?t implement the survey for the whole project areas as well as analyze and assess the detailed forest management and farming systems, some information was surely missing in this mission. This report is based on initial outcomes of the survey in order to provide relevant information for the incoming planning workshop. Comments of colleagues and interested readers are highly appreciated. . We take this opportunity to express our appreciation to Ea H'leo PC, Ea H'leo SALM, Ea Hiao and Ea Sol PCs, Lak PC, Lak SALM, Dak Nue and Bong Krang PCs, and villagers of the above-mentioned communes who freely extended co-operation to the mission and shared their ideas for the successful completion of this survey.
